Home Security and Home Insurance

Snug as a bug in a rug” is the feeling most people would say is their goal when it comes to home security. They want to know that they are safe from property crime and property damage. They’re concerned with how home security and home insurance relates.

Homeowners and renters should be happy with the results of the FBI’s uniform crime report, which states that over the period of the years between 2003 to 2012 property crimes have decreases 14.1%. Unfortunately that low percentage still means that were nearly nine million property crimes in the United States during the last year of the study (2012).

Security companies understand that property loss is personal. The risk of loss by theft or fire maybe relatively small for most, but for the victim it is an all-consuming tragedy. One only has to look at the nightly news to see reports of people dealing with loss, loss of their home, loss of treasured possessions, and even loss of family members.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) the answer may lay in building smarter and safer homes through the development of disaster-resilient homes that in turn reduce the loss of life and property. This can be accomplished through the use of updated building codes, training, and education through workshops and publications, risk management of manmade disasters, and smart usage materials and products.

For existing homes maintenance and careful inspection with both active and passive monitoring risk points are warranted. For some, whole home security systems can make a lot of sense. They can provide 24/7 against many form of loss, including fire and break-ins. While not foolproof, with the combination of wired and wireless systems can be quite effective.

According to the FBI, a burglary occurs every 15.4 seconds, and of that, 90% will go unsolved – so your best bet is prevention! Security systems can run the gamut of complexity, from a simple sticker in the window saying you have a security system, to a multi-part system involving wireless and wired technology. Systems can range from monitored to unmonitored; with many choices involving the level of monitoring that is required for your specific level of security.

Insurance companies recognize the need for monitoring and reward policy holders with credits that affect the entire insurance cost. Credits begin with a two percent credit for simple smoke detectors (required now by most building codes) to twenty-five percent and more for systems that monitor a property in real time for fire, water, burglary, or any type of unwanted intrusion.

To take advantage of these savings and make your homes safer contact a local insurance agent. He has a wealth of information available to you that is free of charge and sales pressure. He can let you know what discounts are available and how you can take advantage of them.
